Premier League clubs are planning to fight the Football Association over their plans to reduce the number of overseas players allowed in a 25-man squad. It was reported earlier this week that the FA have put forward a proposal to limit overseas players at 12, down from the current 17, in the wake of Brexit. The Premier League are going against the FA proposals1

This would increase the homegrown quota in every squad, with more than half (13) of every 25-man selection requiring to have spent three years in an English or Welsh club’s academy between the ages of 16 and 21.The proposal is due to be discussed at Thursday’s Premier League shareholders’ meeting, and The Times say top flight clubs will challenge the FA’s plans. However, there could be a compromise agreed to ensure the FA still offer a ‘governing body endorsement (GBE)’, which would guarantee every overseas player signed after Brexit would be awarded a work permit, even if they don’t meet current requirements. It is believed a number of teams are ready to agree to a cut in the number of overseas players to keep a GBE on the table, though the report says chairmen are more likely to accept 15 overseas players in a squad rather than the proposed 12.This would require every 25-man squad to include 10 homegrown players, and is regarded as a less drastic change to the present ruling.
